3OT: Rules For Life, How To Break Your Mind, & Surfing

"How about the birds, when they sing, do you whistle back..."

Hey friends,

Welcome back to another 3 On Thursday! Lot of bangers this week…

Quote of the week:

"You began this journey in the spirit, why are you trying to finish it in the flesh?” - Galations 3:3

Totally out of context from its original use, but to me this verse is a reminder that if you began something because you’re passionate about it, don’t let it become another mundane task you have to complete. Keep that passion alive.

3 Things:

  1. Inspired by the above tweet, here are some of my personal rules for life:

    • Don't believe everything you think (doubly true between 12-3pm)

    • Don't trust food that has 0 calories

    • Never say "no offense" or "obviously"

    • Be very wary of nonfiction sequals (e.g. Robert Kiyosaki has ~10 books under the "rich dad poor dad" umbrella. Only the original is good)

    • You don't have to like them, but you have to respect them

    • When someone tells you they're starting something new, ALWAYS be supportive

    • When visiting a new city, find a place to watch the sunset

  2. Pure gold from ‘The Untethered Soul’ (one of my favorite books around mental health/reducing anxiety)

If you mistreat an animal, it becomes afraid. This is what has happened to your psyche. You have mistreated it by giving it a responsibility that is incomprehensible. Just stop for a moment and see what you have given your mind to do. You said to your mind, “I want everyone to like me. I don’t want anyone to speak badly of me. I want everything I say and do to be pleasing and acceptable to everyone. I don’t want anyone to hurt me. I don’t want anything to happen that I don’t like. And I want everything to happen that I do like.” Then you said, “Now mind, go figure out how to make everyone of these things a reality, even if you have to think about it day and night." And of course your mind says, “I’m on the job. I will work on it constantly."

A good reminder how powerful photography can be.

P.S. Try signing up for something new this month. I recently signed up for a Spikeball League with a friend, and can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. 10/10 recommend.
